Research @ the Centre

We’re building a community of experts, researchers, support professionals, survivors, and caregivers to bridge knowledge gaps and create a united force for change.

By providing a forum for international knowledge sharing and mobilization, we are bringing together multisectoral experts on IPV and BI from around the world to participate in virtual discussions and structured educational webinars on diverse topics.

Our purpose is a coordinated national strategy for IPV-BI support, strengthening community-based capacity to effectively address IPV-BI by supporting survivors through cross-disciplinary training, and targeted resources and protocols. Given that many multi-sector services exist within silos, it is important to provide an opportunity to learn from similar services across Canada, share best and promising practices and resources, and form new networks and partnerships to address existing challenges and gaps in care.

Study on conducting strangulation investigations and prosecutions in Canada

Dr. Amanda McCormick is recruiting police officers and Crown Counsel to participate in an approximately 90 minute virtual interview on the challenges with and strategies for conducting criminal investigations and prosecutions on strangulation in Canada.

For more information or to participate in an interview, please email Amanda.McCormick@ufv.ca.

Building Awareness and Service Provider Capacity for IPV-BI in Canada

The goal of this project is to raise awareness, develop educational materials and provide specialized training around intimate partner violence-related brain injury (IPV-BI). We are inviting survivors to complete a survey and/or participate in an interview or focus group with a member of our research team.

Life After Impact

Designed for adults who have experienced gender-based violence and brain injury, the Life After Impact program includes an online training program, a peer-led support group, a psychoeducational group, and one-on-one supports (vocational rehabilitation, occupational therapy, social work). OBIA intends to evaluate the program with goals of future expansion in mind. If you would like to participate in the program and share feedback on your experiences, please visit the website and register for the program. *Please note that the program is available to residents of Ontario.

  • “Our research to date indicates brain injury is happening in much higher numbers, and having more chronic effects in survivors, than most researchers, health care practitioners, and other frontline workers realize.”
